Here are some considerations for employers wanting to hire the best people.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The current jobs market is the most competitive we\u2019ve ever seen. As we\u2019ve\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.keeganadams.com.au\/speed-strategy-and-counter-offers-how-to-navigate-an-intense-job-market\/\">written before<\/a>, this is due to a number of reasons including the difficulty in bringing in talent from overseas to plug skill gaps.<\/p>\n<p>With this red-hot recruitment market showing no signs of abating, employers need to be savvy about how they attract the right people. We are consistently hearing the same feedback from candidates \u2013 the latest wave of lockdowns has changed what they\u2019re looking for. Employers need to provide this, otherwise they risk missing out.<\/p>\n<p>Here are five areas for employers to consider when recruiting right now.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>1. Provide clarity on the return to the office<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A recent report from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pc.gov.au\/research\/completed\/working-from-home\">Productivity Commission<\/a>\u00a0called the pandemic one of the biggest changes to work in 50 years.<\/p>\n<p>With so many factors to consider, returning to the office for those of us who have been in extended lockdown is certainly not an easy prospect to manage for employers.<\/p>\n<p>While it might be difficult to map out the future workplace, it\u2019s important to candidates. One of the first questions we are asked by candidates these days is what does the workplace look like? This indicates a clear plan on what the future looks like is attractive for a candidate. We all want to move from \u2018coping\u2019 mode and back towards more normality.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. \u00a0Understand that flexibility is not optional<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Not that long ago, offering flexibility was a benefit. Now, it\u2019s a given.<\/p>\n<p>Candidates expect flexibility and if it\u2019s not available, they will be reluctant to take a position.<\/p>\n<p>For employers, this involves defining what flexibility means and how it will work within your organisation.<\/p>\n<p>It also means you can no longer rely on flexibility as a differentiator.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>3. \u00a0Be clear on culture<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>And while flexibility has become a permanent feature of the work environment, the office and company culture remains very important. Especially as we have been physically distant for a while and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sydney.edu.au\/news-opinion\/news\/2021\/10\/07\/lift-in-restrictions--sydney-experts-on-what-we-can-expect.html\">psychologists expect<\/a>\u00a0an adjustment period when we return.<\/p>\n<p>For example, how do you re-establish team connection? Balance the dual needs of increased flexibility and showing we have a plan for the future of the workplace?<\/p>\n<p>Another consideration is how managers will keep mentoring more junior staff and recognising star performers if they\u2019re not physically with each other.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>4. \u00a0Meet the market on salary<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In this market, it\u2019s essential to ensure the salaries you are offering are competitive, especially if you haven\u2019t hired externally in a while.<\/p>\n<p>It may come as a surprise how salaries have inflated across the board \u2013 we\u2019d estimate around 20 \u2013 30% for experienced hires. And, in many areas, graduate\/entry level positions are averaging $65 &#8211; $70k packages.<\/p>\n<p>So, stay up-to-date, ask around and consult a professional recruiter if in doubt.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>5. \u00a0Communicate softer benefits<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>With flexibility no longer a differentiator, and salaries rising, companies should also look to soft benefits such as training, development and culture.<\/p>\n<p>Also remember that\u2019s it\u2019s not just about offering all these benefits but projecting them to candidates.
